Rimless Chinese brass spectacles
Rimless Chinese brass spectacles
In the late 1800′s eyeglasses became an important affectation for upper class Chinese. When they saw eyeglasses on visiting Westerners, the Chinese thought of these glasses as increasing one’s apparent age; ie. they added age and dignity to the wearer. Age meant wisdom and respect, so a lot of Chinese took up the wearing eyeglasses even if they did not need them. Those with good eyesight used a clear lens (no correction).
This pair has thick glass lenses with no power. They have brass temple pieces and are in good condition. This is the style from the early 1800′s.
