Antique Foldable Pocket Ophthalmoscope | Early 1900s Concave Mirror Eye Instrument

SKU: Oph 2 Category:

A charming and elegantly simple antique foldable pocket ophthalmoscope, probably dating from the early 1900s. This very basic but historically interesting model consists of a concave mirror with a central aperture, mounted on a folding wire handle that allows the instrument to be collapsed flat for easy pocket carry — a practical design well suited to the visiting physician or itinerant eye specialist of the era.

The concept of the folding ophthalmoscope has a distinguished lineage. As early as 1880, Parrot had developed a considerably more sophisticated folding ophthalmoscope design, demonstrating that portability was already recognized as a desirable quality in eye examination instruments. This early 1900s example represents the simpler, more economical end of that tradition — stripped back to its essential function, with nothing more than a concave mirror and a folding handle to achieve the same fundamental purpose.

To use, the examiner would hold the mirror close to their eye, direct a light source onto the patient’s eye via the reflective surface, and peer through the central hole to examine the interior of the eye. Despite its modest construction, this type of instrument placed ophthalmoscopy within reach of general practitioners and rural physicians who could not afford the more elaborate instruments of the day.
