Antique Herschel Prism by Carl Zeiss | Variable Prism Eye Examination Instrument

Category:

A rare and scientifically distinguished antique Herschel Prism by Carl Zeiss, presented in its original fitted case — an instrument that combines the legacy of two of the greatest names in the history of optics and optical science.

The Herschel Prism takes its name from John Herschel (1792–1871), the celebrated English mathematician, astronomer, and polymath who developed the concept of rotating two prisms against each other to produce a continuously variable moving prism. This elegant optical principle — sometimes called the Herschel or double prism system — allowed for the smooth and precise introduction of prismatic power into an optical system without the need for fixed prisms of discrete power, making it a highly versatile tool for the measurement and correction of binocular vision anomalies such as heterophoria and strabismus.

Manufactured by Carl Zeiss of Jena — the legendary German optical company whose name is synonymous with the highest standards of optical precision — this instrument represents the finest possible execution of Herschel’s concept. The Zeiss workshops applied their exacting manufacturing standards to every component, producing a Herschel Prism of exceptional optical clarity and mechanical reliability.

Presented in its original fitted carrying case, this is a beautifully preserved example of early 20th century German optical instrument craftsmanship, and a highly collectible piece connecting two of the towering figures of optical history.
