Description

Joaquin Barraquer originally proposed a vacuum pump to create the suction needed to apply to the suction spoon in order to remove the cataractous crystalline lens from the eye. This was in 1920. Supposedly he got the original idea by watching a leech in an aquarium lifting a rock by applying suction to it.
