Loring Ophthalmoscope 1877
The Loring ophthalmoscope represents a landmark achievement in 19th-century ophthalmic instrument design. This particular specimen was the last in Edward Greely Loring’s succession of improvements to the ophthalmoscope. It carries fifteen lenses, numbered consecutively in digits and in diopters, making it one of the most refined diagnostic tools of its era. A Precision Instrument
The instrument features a rectangular rotatable concave mirror. This mirror picks up light and directs it into the subject’s eyes with exceptional control. The inner lens is marked “Dr. Loring’s Ophthalmoscope” and retains its original maker’s inscription: J. Reynolds & Co., Surgeons’ Instrument Makers, 303 Fourth Avenue, New York. The ebonite handle is a later replacement that fits loosely into the hole designed for the original.
Edward Greely Loring
Edward Greely Loring was born in Boston in 1837. He began his medical studies in Europe and completed them at Harvard Medical School, receiving his doctorate in 1864. The works of Helmholtz, Donders, and Graefe drew him into ophthalmology and shaped his scientific outlook.
Loring briefly practiced in Baltimore before relocating to New York. There he became the partner of Cornelius Rea Agnew. He worked at the Brooklyn Eye and Ear Hospital and later at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary until his death in 1888. He published his influential textbook on ophthalmology in 1886.
A Career of Continuous Refinement
Loring developed his first ophthalmoscope, designed for refraction, in 1869. He continued refining the instrument across nearly a decade of successive models. His final model appeared in 1878, after a series of carefully considered improvements. Each iteration reflected his commitment to optical precision and clinical utility.
Rarity and Significance
This 1877 Loring ophthalmoscope occupies a critical place in the history of American ophthalmic instrumentation. Few examples survive in this condition with original markings intact. It speaks directly to the ingenuity and ambition of 19th-century American medical science. See our antique ophthalmoscope museum collection.
