What Is a Lensmeter?
A lensmeter — also called a focimeter or lensometer — measures the optical power of a lens. Opticians use it to verify prescription lenses before dispensing them. It identifies sphere power, cylinder power, axis, and the optical center of the lens. Every optical practice relied on one as an essential daily tool.
Design and Construction
This Italian lensmeter has a distinctive and elegant design. It features a sturdy cast iron base with a telephone-style upright column. The brass optical head is mounted on an articulated arm allowing precise positioning. The overall aesthetic is characteristic of mid-century Italian industrial design — functional yet refined.
