Landoldt ophthalmotrope 1893
Landoldt ophthalmotrope was invented in 1893.(Edmund Landolt 1846-1926)
The first ophthalmotrope was described by Ruete in 1845. Ruete used something called a Cardan joint also known as a “universal joint” (invented by Cardano, 1501-1576).
That design made it possible to use the center of rotation for the optics.
This Landolt model was meant to simplify the Ruete model and still uses the Cardan suspension.
It was made by E. B. Meyerowitz. The telescoping lacquered brass base and stand support the frame of anodized and lacquered brass The ophthalmotrope is an instrument used to demonstrate the movement of the eye. The innermost sphere represents the eye and turns on a number of axes. Height is 33 cm. and extends to 48 cm. The diameter of the sphere cage is 11 cm
