Iseikonic Lenses
This antique set of iseikonic lenses is a rare and fascinating piece of ophthalmic history. The lenses are presented in a beautiful fitted wooden case with purple and orange silk lining. Few collectors ever encounter a complete iseikonic lens set in this condition.
What Are Iseikonic Lenses?
Iseikonic lenses correct a condition called aniseikonia. This occurs when the two eyes perceive images of significantly different sizes. The brain struggles to fuse two differently sized images into one. This causes eyestrain, headaches, and sometimes double vision.
How They Work
Humans can fuse images with up to approximately 5% size difference between the two eyes. Beyond that threshold, fusion becomes difficult or impossible. Iseikonic lenses are specifically designed to reduce that size difference. They achieve this through carefully calculated changes in lens curvature, thickness, and base curve — without necessarily changing the refractive power of the lens.
Design and Construction
The lenses in this set are elongated and distinctive in appearance. Their unusual shape immediately sets them apart from standard trial or spectacle lenses. Each lens sits in its own fitted slot in the velvet-lined case. The craftsmanship of both the lenses and the case reflects the high standards expected of specialist ophthalmic equipment of the era.
Iseikonic lenses were developed primarily in the mid-20th century as understanding of binocular vision advanced. They were prescribed far less frequently than standard corrective lenses. This rarity makes complete sets in original cases exceptionally hard to find today.
Collectibility
This iseikonic lens set appeals to collectors of antique ophthalmic instruments, optometrists with an interest in binocular vision history, and museums documenting the development of vision science. It is a genuinely uncommon piece that represents a specialized and little-known chapter of optical history.
