Antique Minifying Glass — c. 1890

This antique minifying glass dates from around 1890 and presents one of the more curious and lesser-known optical instruments of the Victorian era. It is marked “Made in France” and appears to be chrome-plated over brass. The lens measures 3.5 cm in diameter. The total length is 9.5 cm. The lens power is -7.75 diopters — a concave, diverging lens that reduces rather than enlarges the apparent size of objects. This example may have been custom made as a quizzing glass for a myopic owner. Read the history of the quizzing glass and hand-held optical instruments at the College of Optometrists.

What Is a Minifying Glass?

A minifying glass is the optical opposite of a magnifying glass. Where a magnifying glass uses a convex lens to enlarge an image, a minifying glass uses a concave lens to reduce it. The effect gives the viewer a wider apparent field of vision — objects appear smaller but more of the visual scene becomes visible at once. For a nearsighted person, a minifying glass could improve overall distance vision by reducing the apparent size of objects and bringing more of the scene into comfortable focus.

A Rare Alternative to Spectacles

By 1890, spectacles and pince-nez dominated the market for vision correction. Minifying glasses occupied a niche role. They sold alongside hand magnifiers around 1900 but never achieved widespread adoption. The quizzing glass — a single-lens hand-held optical tool popular from the 18th century — had already fallen from fashion by 1825. This example may represent a late survival of that tradition, adapted for a myopic user who preferred a hand-held solution over fitted spectacles.

Construction and Markings

The chrome-plated brass frame is clean and well-preserved. The loop handle is simple and elegant. The lens sits securely in its circular frame. The “Made in France” marking places production firmly within the tradition of fine French optical instrument making that dominated the late 19th century consumer market. French optical goods of this period set the standard for quality and finish across Europe and North America.
