The Duralite Welder’s Goggles by American Optical, dating to the 1940s, are a striking example of mid-century industrial eye protection at its most characterful. Marked “DURALITE” on both the plastic/leather rim and the metal frame, these goggles are constructed with a brown Bakelite frame that appears similar to hard leather but is in fact one of the earliest synthetic plastics — Bakelite, the material that defined early 20th century industrial design and remains highly collectible today for its warm brown tones and distinctive feel.

American Optical was one of America’s most important optical companies throughout the 20th century, and their industrial safety products were as carefully engineered as their ophthalmic instruments. The Duralite goggles feature clear lenses with a lens cap that unscrews to allow substitution with prescription lenses — a thoughtful design feature that made these goggles practical for workers who required corrective vision as well as eye protection. The silver and black lens color combination, round lens openings, and flexible strap attachment points reflect the functional industrial aesthetic of wartime and immediate postwar American manufacturing.

The original strap remains attached and the condition is rated rare excellent — remarkable for a piece of industrial equipment that was designed for hard use in workshop environments. The combination of brown Bakelite, round clear lenses, and industrial metal fittings gives these goggles an undeniable visual appeal that has made them popular with collectors of both vintage eyewear and industrial antiques — and as noted, they make a superb “steampunk” aesthetic piece for those so inclined.
